Laydilay is an organic poultry farm on the southern flank of Dartmoor. Laydilay was started in 2004 by Andy and Mandy Johnson, they look after over 1800 laying hens, and pack and deliver all the eggs themselves. They also produce mayonnaise, meringues and macaroons. They believe that organic farming is more sustainable, and takes a holistic view of food production, and they place the welfare of their animals at the heart of the business. This approach starts from when the chicks arrive on the farm, and continues on until they retire- to date they have been able to rehome all of their older ladies! They believe that ensuring their hens have access to good quality pasture, food and access to the range throughout the day has a role to play in the taste and quality of their eggs. All the hens are housed in mobile houses that are moved to fresh ground during their laying life.

A cracking time is had at the old steamhouse in Buckfastleigh, where Lois, Natalie and our work experience student meet the Johnson family team behind the organic egg range.
